Stay safe during extreme heat

We are experiencing dangerous heat and high humidity, a trend that is likely to continue throughout the summer.

Extreme heat can affect anyone, but outdoor workers, older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and those without access to air conditioning face higher risks.

Heat-related illness can develop quickly. Taking preventative measures and recognizing warning signs can help protect you and your outdoor workers on jobsites or during events. Remember to use the buddy system and watch for signs of heat stress in others. This page includes some tips and resources to stay safe during extreme heat events.

Working safely in extreme weather conditions:

•    Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
•    Take breaks in shaded or cooler areas.
•    Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
•    Use sun protective measures like sunscreen and hats.
•    If possible, adjust work schedules to perform work during cooler parts of the day.

Know the signs of heat illness:

•    Dizziness
•    Headache
•    Excessive sweating
•    Muscle cramps
•    Nausea
•    Weakness or fatigue
