Habitat for Humanity – Clinton County mourns the loss of a dear friend and longtime supporter, Charles Lakatos, known to so many simply as Charlie. He passed away peacefully at his home on October 19, 2025, at the age of 93.
Charlie is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Justine Lakatos; two granddaughters, Amanda and Veronica Lakatos; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley, who passed away in April 2016.
Born on May 22, 1932, Charlie was a bright spot in the Clinton County community. He was an active member of the First Christian Disciples of Christ Church, where he served faithfully as a Deacon and participated in many church activities.
A proud veteran, Charlie served his country in the United States Navy with the Seabees. He was also a devoted member of the Wilmington American Legion Post #49 Memorial Team, where he conducted honors at many veterans’ memorials, and a member of the Forty and Eight, an independent honor society for American veterans and service members.
Charlie was well-known for his ever-present smile, quick wit, and generous heart. A talented woodworker, he could transform any piece of wood into a work of art — from furniture and cabinets to delicate jewelry boxes and children’s toys, each crafted with meticulous care and attention to detail.
For over 20 years, Charlie shared his craftsmanship and joyful spirit on the Habitat job site, helping build homes and hope for families in Clinton County. Even after stepping back from construction in his 90s, he continued to visit often — checking in on the crew and lending encouragement wherever he could. Drawing on his many community connections, he helped raise vital funds to keep Habitat’s mission alive.
Charlie loved life, loved people, and loved serving others. His warmth, humor, and kindness touched everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed by all of us at Habitat for Humanity – Clinton County and by the community he helped to build.
